What is C.A.R.E.?
Caregiving, Awareness & Relationship Education, or C.A.R.E. (formerly ParentABLE), is a web-based, instructor-led curriculum for grades 8-12. The program includes 8 evidence-based lessons, containing informative, animated videos, interactive knowledge checks with immediate feedback, student note assists, handouts, pre-and post-learning surveys, and emotional support contacts. ParenTeach Institute also provides access to a comprehensive teacher’s guide for all teachers to utilize as they guide their students through the curriculum.

C.A.R.E. started as a student-driven initiative at Evanston Township High school in Illinois. A group of students advocated for parenting and caregiving education to be included in the wellness course required for graduation, and they succeeded. Their efforts led to constituent legislation that is piloting parenting education in high schools throughout the state of Illinois.

The C.A.R.E. parenting/caregiving unit provides high school students with awareness, knowledge, and skills to care for and encourage the physical, mental, and emotional development of children.

In this impactful film, check out what students, teachers and subject matter experts say about C.A.R.E. (referred to as ParentABLE in this video), our course for high schoolers. (The full 12-minute documentary can be found here.)

Documentary

Parenting education should be a required course in high school. I think it is essential for everybody, whether you’re going to be a parent or not, to understand how to treat children in a way that fosters their development.

Implementing C.A.R.E.
ParenTeach Institute trains high school educators to deliver C.A.R.E.'s 6.5-hour Positive Parenting and Caregiving curriculum to help their students develop a foundational understanding of positive parenting and caregiving practices. The C.A.R.E. curriculum includes:

✔ Information about the effects of unintentional harmful parenting
✔ The consequences of adverse childhood experiences
✔ The power of resilience and positive parenting and caregiving
✔ Positive parenting and core competencies used to strengthen the connection between caregiver and child
✔ Positive parenting and caregiving techniques that can be applied immediately

The 6.5-hour curriculum aims to:

✔ Reduce child abuse and neglect rates
✔ Break the cycle of unintentional harmful parenting
✔ Promote Early Relational Health
✔ Build the social and emotional competencies of parents and caregivers
✔ Provide practical positive parenting and caregiving skills
✔ Create a level of comfort with seeking future parenting and caregiving resources and support
Teachers who choose to implement C.A.R.E. at their school or organization are eligible to earn up to 6 Continuing Education Units. "For me as a teacher, I’m totally sold on this program, and I think that my high school students are greatly benefiting by having this program in our school.”
- Kathy P.
a C.A.R.E. High School Teacher
"I think this is a great opportunity for people in general to grow and learn. Soon I hope parenting classes will be taught worldwide because too many kids suffer and are suffering from improper parenting techniques. I talked to my mom about it and she was all about it and realized she also made a few mistakes while parenting us. I love that we are doing this, this is so very important for literally the human race."
- Jenny P.
a C.A.R.E. High School Student
"I like that we got to learn about parenting; I feel like schools don't really talk about this and expect us to already know about parenting, which we don't have a lot of knowledge of."
- Darrell F.
a C.A.R.E. High School Student
